Chiefs and Huskies: More Than a Team

There was a special pride in growing up and attending Pontiac schools—a pride we have seen throughout many urban minority communities. We proudly say, “I am a Chief” or “I am a Huskie.” That same pride carries into claiming the South Side, the Hills, or other hometown identities. It is the pride felt in Flint when someone says they are a Northwestern Wildcat, in Detroit when they claim Cooley, or in Saginaw when they wear the black and gold of the Trojans. Many of these schools no longer exist, but their impact continues to live in us.

Through the Pontiac Project template and the Pontiac 60 initiative, one of our central goals is to restore that culture. We also recognize that pride grows from the ability to achieve success. We want success in our classrooms, in the arts and music, and on our courts and fields. The Pontiac Project and Pontiac 60 are committed to contributing to that success. Our goal is not to accept mediocrity or failure, especially when it is accompanied by excuses.

We will set clear goals and deliverables as we work toward success. We invite all Chiefs, Huskies, and people connected to the city of Pontiac—whether you live here today or are a product of this community—to take part in this incredible transformation.
